Lecture Series

  • Copper Fox Distillery 901 Capitol Landing Road Williamsburg United States (map)

Our Lecture Series continues on Wednesday, July 19th, with Ed Moore giving a fascinating presentation about Navy U Boats. The lecture series is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come, first-served.

After Pearl Harbor, most ships in the United States Navy were sent to slow the Japanese in the Pacific, leaving the Atlantic Coast undefended from the German submarine onslaught. From Maine to Miami in the Atlantic, from Miami to New Orleans in the Gulf of Mexico, a few Coast Guard Cutters fought to slow the sinking of hundreds of Allied ships. The Germans called 1942 in the mid-Atlantic coast “The Turkey Shoot” and “The Happy Time.” American sailors called it “Torpedo Junction.” In only six months, 397 Allied ships were torpedoed, 80 off Cape Hatteras, N.C. After the presentation, there will be a Q&A session.

Ed Moore is a retired newspaper Sports Editor and Sports Columnist. Ed won 91 journalism awards during his career and three times was named one of the top five sports columnists in the United States, and the sports sections he edited were named among the best in the nation 18 times. Since 2004, Ed has been a member of the Speakers' Bureau for the Mariners’ Museum, primarily speaking about Naval Warfare.
