Free Lecture Series - Camel Corps

The monthly free lecture series is designed to share knowledge and information on topics of interest related to history, world events and science with a focus on anything that has ties to the Hampton Roads area.

Marc Sammis will speak about the Army’s experiment with camels in the Southwest during the 1850s. He will explain the concept and trials working with camels at that time. He will speak about the reasons for the experiment and the results.

About the speaker:

Marc Sammis is retired from US Army after 26 years. Six years combined active service and 20 years in the reserves. Served 28 years with the Army Museum Enterprise. Eleven years as the collection manager for the US Army Center of Military History and the National Museum of the Army in Washington, DC, then 17 years as the curator at the US Army Transportation Museum at Ft Eustis.

While in Washington, worked as one of the technical advisers for several movies including The Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan, The Good German, The Patriot, Pearl Harbor, We were Soldiers and The Great Raid.

The monthly lectures are free and open to the public with first-come, first-served seating. After the presentation, there will be a Q&A session.  Cocktails and whisky flights available for purchase as well as snacks & small plates.
